Don’t Sweat Summer Fitness

July 14, 2017 by TaylorB

It’s tough to stay active during the summer. With all that heat and humidity, a few minutes outside can leave the kids sapped of strength and ready to collapse on the couch. But you don’t have to give into inactivity. Keep your family moving with indoor fitness at Wheels.

Health Benefits of Roller-Skating

You knew skating was fun, but did you know it’s good for you, too? Skating is a great way to keep the family active when it’s hot. Our facilities are clean and air conditioned, and if you need a pick-me-up, all you need to do is roll over to our concession stand. Don’t wait to skate! The health benefits of roller-skating include:

  • tired runner on trackBurning calories. Has your family gotten a little too comfortable with sweets this summer? Burn off that extra ice cream with fun fitness in Odenton. An average sized adult can burn 9-10 calories in one minute of moderate skating. Depending on how hard you skate, that adds up to 300-600 calories per hour!
  • Strengthening muscles. Roller-skating works out a variety of muscles, from your legs and glutes to your abs, arms, and even your heart! It’s also a great way to improve coordination and flexibility.
  • Low-impact exercise. Exercise like running may be great for your body, but they’re bad for your joints. Roller-skating is a low-impact fitness routine, so you can skate all day without worrying about damage to your joints.
  • Mood boost. Yep, just like other forms of exercise, roller-skating can reduce stress and improve your mood. Skate for the smiles on your children’s faces!

Ready to roll? Don’t miss summer skating fun at Wheels.

How to Prevent Skating Blisters

April 20, 2017 by TaylorB

A rainy day can’t ruin an afternoon of roller-skating, and neither can a blistering hot summer. But rub a few blisters, and suddenly your favorite activity sounds a lot less appealing. Blisters are one of the most common roller-skating injuries. They may be a minor pain, but skating is a lot smoother without them. Prevent blisters while skating with these tips from Wheels.

How to Prevent Blisters

  • bandaidWear great skates. We keep our skate rentals in great condition, but if you’re having trouble with blisters, you may want to invest in your own skates. When you break in a new pair of skates, they conform to the shape of your foot, which minimizes blisters and hot spots. If you’re renting skates, make sure they’re the right size and laced tightly. When there’s too much space between your foot and the boot, it creates friction, which causes blisters.
  • Check your stance. Are you a toe pusher? If you push with just your toes, you’re more likely to develop hot spots. Instead of pushing off with just your toes, push off with your whole foot, which spreads out the pressure and minimizes friction.
  • Get padded. If you feel a blister forming, cushion the spot. Wear an extra layer of socks or, if you only have a few hot spots, wear a blister bandage underneath your socks. Either way, make sure your socks fit snugly, or you’ll only contribute to the blister problem.

Ready to roll again? We’ll see you at Wheels skating center in Odenton.

5 Tips for a Better Birthday Party

March 27, 2017 by TaylorB

Birthdays are better at Wheels skating center. When you book a roller-skating party, we do everything we can to make sure you have the time of your life. That means taking care of setup and cleanup, providing a dedicated Party Hostess to dish up pizza and drinks, and keeping the good times rolling all afternoon (and beyond—we give the guests free skate passes for next time). We do a lot to make sure your child has the best birthday party ever. Here’s how you can make planning a kid’s birthday party a piece of cake!

5 Tips for a Better Birthday Party

  1. boy with birthday cakePlan early. Leaving the party planning until the last minute is a recipe for stress. Book your party early to ensure you get the time you want, give parents more time to send RSVPs, and plan those extra touches that your child will never forget.
  2. Pick your package. Wheels offers birthday party options for every size party (and budget). Do you want to surprise your child with a balloon bouquet, glow gear, and other fun freebies? Upgrade to the MOST Fun Party Package.
  3. Get a great gift. Nothing suits a skating party like new roller-skates.
  4. Limit the guests. Younger kids may feel overwhelmed with a big birthday crowd, while older children probably want all their friends to attend their birthday party. A good rule of thumb is to invite the same number of guests as your child’s age.
  5. Avoid meltdowns. Nobody wants crocodile tears on the big day. Make sure the birthday kid gets plenty of rest before the party, eats a full breakfast, and comes to Wheels ready to roll.

It’s party time! Call to book your child’s birthday party in Odenton.

The Team That Skates Together, Stays Together

February 20, 2017 by TaylorB

happy business peopleBusinesses come and go, but the most successful businesses have strong teams. When you’re building a business and you want a strong team, you need to plan events that will build them up as a unit. A team that is able to come together outside of the frustrations of the office is a team that will work together better and produce a lot more during the work day. If you’re planning a team building event or a corporate event to thank to your team for their hard work, you’ll need a venue. There are a lot of places where you can sit around a table, have dinner, and just say thank you, but there is one place where you can go to have tons of laughs, see fun sides of each other, and be active all at the same time, you want to bring your team to Wheels Skate Center!

We have a great facility where you and your team can come and experience a lot of fun, team building exercises, and camaraderie. We know exactly how important this is to your business! You’ll enjoy seeing your team connect, because they’re building the foundation of your business’ future success. Your team won’t be the same after a roller-skating team building day at Wheels. After all, nothing bonds coworkers faster than skating to top 40’s songs, playing arcade games, enjoying food, and talking about what they love about the team. Wheels is your destination for corporate fun.

You don’t have to have the same team building experience that everyone is used to. Think outside of the box and book your corporate event at Wheels!

Achieving Your Resolutions

January 5, 2017 by Zach Sanders

We’re pretty sure you didn’t achieve your 2016 resolutions. Why? Because statistics say that only 8% of people actually make resolutions, and stick to them. What are your resolutions for 2017? Whatever they are, check out these top idea for making them stick.

1. Make them specific.

Do you have a goal to ‘get fit’ or ‘lose weight?’ While both of those are great goals, research says that if you can measure it, you can do it, so instead of just ambiguous goals of fitness or weight loss, attach a specific number or goal. How about losing 10 lbs? A great way to make it happen is by skating at Wheels twice a week.

2. Share your goals

Keeping yourself accountable to friends and family will help you drive yourself to your goals. And, the people that you share your goals with may want to join your journey. You never know, you could have a whole group of friends at Wheels skating with you while you’re here working off those 10 lbs.

3. Schedule It

Treat your goals, and the time it takes to achieve them, as actual appointments – not just items you think might happen when you ‘find time.’ Create the time it takes to achieve your goals, and don’t reschedule on yourself.

4. Something is Better than Nothing

Are you guilty of the ‘all or nothing’ mind set? If you were planning on skating for 60 minutes today, but you only have time for 30, don’t tell yourself it isn’t worth it. Come on over, squeeze in the first 30 minutes and you never know – you might find yourself making the last 30 minutes fit in anyway.

Tell us, what are your resolutions for 2017?
